چکیده

The soft γ–ray source GX 1+4 has been regularly monitored by the SIGMA telescope on board GRANAT since 1990. The accumulated data provides both period and spectral information on this source in the 35–150 keV range. The SIGMA telescope also allows a determination of a pulsed fraction. We report here on the last six years of the SIGMA data on GX 1+4. The general spin down trend is confirmed and the derived periods are consistent with those obtained at other energies. The pulse profiles are shown to be roughly divided into two groups. One including those instances when GX 1+4 presents a relatively high pulsed fraction (> 50%), the other containing those when the source exhibits a low pulsed fraction (< 50%). In an effort to understand this result, we construct an emission model which is based nearly entirely on the geometry of the system to describe the pulse profiles. It is found that the pulsed fraction might possibly be linked to the height of the accretion column.

Accretion Column Disruption in Gx 1+4

Daily observations of the binary X-ray pulsar GX 1+4 were made with the Rossi Xray Timing Explorer (RXTE ) satellite between 1997 May 16–20 as part of a four-month monitoring program. On May 17 the sharp dips normally observed in the lightcurve were all but absent, resulting in a pulse fraction fp ≈ 0.5 instead of the more typical value of ≈ 0.8 measured before and after. Also observed was a dr...

Accretion column eclipses in the X - ray pulsars GX 1 + 4 and RX J 0812 . 4 − 3114

Sharp dips observed in the pulse profiles of three X-ray pulsars (GX 1+4, RX J0812.4−3114 and A 0535+26) have previously been suggested to arise from partial eclipses of the emission region by the accretion column occurring once each rotation period. We present pulse-phase spectroscopy from Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer satellite observations of GX 1+4 and RX J0812.4−3114 which for the first time...

Observations of accreting pulsars

We summarize five years of continuous monitoring of accretion-powered pulsars with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. Our 20–70 keV observations have determined or refined the orbital parameters of 13 binaries, discovered 5 new transient accreting pulsars, measured the pulsed flux history during outbursts of 12 transients (GRO J1744–28, 4U 01...
